Now that I’ve seen all “30 Chick Flicks In 30 Days” some reflection, and insight from the past month is in order.
Specifically, favorite movies, favorite soundtrack, and the most sensual kisses; in addition to the most memorable viewing experience, most memorable lines, and biggest surprise.
FAVORITE MOVIES:
1. “Bright Star”
2. “My Life In Ruins”
3. “Couples Retreat”
4. ”Whip It”
5. “Atonement”
FAVORITE SOUNDTRACK:
“Music and Lyrics”
MOST SENSUAL KISSES:
1. “My Life In Ruins” — It takes place right before the closing credits between Nia Vardalos’ character, Georgia, and Alexis Georgoulis’ character, “Poupi”.
2. “Bright Star” — Each of the kisses between Ben Whishaw’s character, John Keats, and Abbie Cornish’s character, Frances ‘Fanny’ Brawne, seemed so tender.
MOST MEMORABLE VIEWING EXPERIENCE:
On day 14, Jan. 28, my wife, and I settled in to watch “Atonement” while an ice storm proceeded to dump freezing precipitation over our state. Halfway through the two-hour movie the electricity went off, and the film was stuck in our DVD player. Two hours later, the electricity came back on for approx. two minutes, but that was all we needed as we scrambled to remove the disc from the player. We then watched the last hour of the film on my wife’s laptop while weather conditions worsened outside our door; parts of our community were without power for three days. Our lights came back on as we finished the movie.
MOST MEMORABLE LINES—in no specific order:
“Adam likes you a lot,” Saoirse Ronan’s character, Izzie told her mother. “Yeah, why do you think that?” her mom, Michelle Pfeiffer’s character, Rosie, replied. “He made you a music mix. That’s how boys tell you what’s in their hearts,” Izzie said. “I Could Never Be Your Woman”
“Oh my God! You know if you mix these two (cakes) together, it tastes just like a Ring Ding,” said Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character, Patrick Sullivan—a New York fireman, at a wedding cake tasting appointment. “The Accidental Husband”
“I don’t want to get over her. I want to get her back,” said Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character, Tom, of his love for Zooey Deschanel’s character, Summer. “(500) Days of Summer”
“Always kiss (your spouse) like it’s the first time, and the last time,” the husband stated. “Leap Year”
“(I) still have some hope for myself,” Ben Whishaw’s character, John, said. “I think hope useful,” Abbie Cornish’s character, Frances, replied. “But?” he asked. “Hope, and results are different. One doesn’t necessarily create the other,” she said. “Bright Star”
“Sometimes our hearts don’t match our mouths,” said Michelle Monaghan’s character, Hannah, to Patrick Dempsey’s character, Tom. “Made of Honor”

I just heard your story and interview on k-love, so i thought it might be cool to check out the website. I think that this “experiment” of sorts would be so fun for my husband and I to do together. I really liked some of the movies that you watched during your thirty days especially “georgia Rule” and “He’s Just Not That Into You” (even though you didn’t like this one I think that for women everywhere it was very insightful because many of us saw ourselves in one or all of the characters and have allowed ourselves to be treated the way that they were being treated in the movie). I have to say though I think that it would have been nice to have seen your review on some of the classic chick flicks like “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (or anything staring Audrey Hepburn) or “A Royal Wedding” staring Fred Astaire and Jane Powell. All i all though I thought that this would be very fun as well as a great bonding experience for my husband and I, so thanks for the idea and reviews.
Nice wrap up!
I like the soundtrack to “Music and Lyrics” … “Pop Goes my Heart” is so boppy
I caught just a snippet of your interview on K-Love this morning and decided to check out this site. Amazing–and I want to try this, too. Thanks for all the insights
This is good but I keep waiting to hear, is this improving your understanding of your wife or your relationship to her? If so, how?
WOW! I just learned about this from Nicci’s Facebook page. This is really cool! I love you, baby cousin.
the 30 chick flick challenge for me wasn’t just a ride on an emotional rollar coaster it was also a trip around the world. From great cities all around the US to Greece, India, England and Europe, Japan, Egypt and Australia, I came to realize that Love is the same no matter which country you live in, your race, gender, or the color of your skin. Everyone wants to find it, but in some cases “it is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all”. For others it was the realization “to give love and be loved is the greatest gift of all” love requires honesty, forgiveness and truely valueing the others happiness above your own. I got to enjoy some really good movies I might not have otherwise ever watched on my own. I learned a few things along the way. I was surprised that Atonement made your top 5 list because it was my least favorite, but I am a chick and with the war added in it was the closest to a guy movie in the list so I can see how subconsciously it might have appealed more to you, lol. My favorite sound track is to Momma Mia.. yes I bought it, but I think I may be older than you and I loved all those ABBA songs. Thank you so much for allowing me to accompany you and your journey. I wish you all many years of love. (but I am going to miss watching my nightly chick flick without yall)
Hey Nick and Nicci, wanted to leave you with a smile
now that the challenge is over and Valentine’s Day has come and gone I decided to put some of the things I learned into practice. Made a midweek date with my hubby (actually fixed up) took him to see an action/adventure movie that he would enjoy and we had a great time!
I read about this challenge and website in the Toronto Star today and for once, actually remembered the URL still when I got home to my computer. Kudos to you for doing it and it’s interesting that your wife found it paid off in your relationship! I don’t know if I could watch 30 “guy movies” for 30 days! I’m assuming the list would include a bunch of movies with Jackie Chan, Bruce Willis and Will Ferrel, though…
I just read about your odyssey on AOL and I have to say that I think it is great! My brother has always been a big chick flick fan and I think it makes him a better husband. I have to admire your addition of Bright Star to the list. I myself just watched the film last week and was overwhelmed with the tenderness and passion the two characters build up over time. Since you enjoyed Bright Star I think that you shourld try the BBC Mini series of Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth) and the recent Masterpiece Theater version of Jane Eyre.
I just saw your story on AOL.com, and it intrigued me..so, i read your blogs! Very cool idea!
Enjoyed it very much, although I’d probably rank some of those movies in a different order (but that’s probably because I’m a girl)..haha. I’d be interested to know your wife’s rankings
You made today’s “Toronto Star” again:

What a great idea! You all should live happily ever after.
I’m really impressed with your web site. I can’t believe
27 Dresses and Made of Honor were on the list. They
were not my favorites but I’ll watch them again and see what I missed.
Let me just say that I just read ever intry of your blog and find it rather refreshing and encouraging to know that there are guys like you out there. . .hopefully some of them are still single as you are not lol. . .Nicci, in case you didn’t know (which I’m sure you do) you are extremely lucky to have found Nick. I’ve always wondered if there were actually guys that were like the ones on books or movies and reading just what you took away from these 30 movies gives me hope that one day I’ll find my own fairytale!!
I love that you did this! I’m not a chick-flick girl myself, quite the opposite actually, so it was interesting getting perspective and inspiration from such a different point of view. I got the impression that you managed to get past the frivolous trappings that so often make chick-flicks insipid and cut to what they’re truly about – people who love each other and are willing to work for that love.
Awesome program today! I’ve got my laptop up wating for my husband to get in the living room so I can prep him for the concept…and then watch “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past”
)
Good job, Nick!
hey,

you’re on the facebook pages of Pakistan. i found your blog on jezebel.com, and proceeded to pass your link around to all my friends.
I havent been through the whole blog in detail, but i love the idea.
ps. how many countries now? 12?
Nick I just saw you and your wife on the Early Show!!! My Dad had called me and told me about it but I forgot and then I saw you this morning on TV! So then after I got onto my facebook page guess what we were all talking about this! I think that you have done something that a lot of guys wouldn’t do! You both had a wonderful interview and looked great! You sent a great message! Don’t wait till you have to do something nice!! Do it because you want to!! So are you going to watch 30 guy flicks in 30 days and see what your wife thinks? I think it would be great!! lol
just saw you and your wife on tv this morning and am going to take the challenge with my husband. we both thought you articulated very well during your interview. i have gone through your movie list and we have seen a few of them but many of them we have never heard of. looking forward to taking the time to go through them and watch them together. great idea! thanks!
Just saw an article on Yahoo with your Early Show interview. Interesting idea. Too bad we learned of it after the fact, but it is something that can still be considered…Not sure that we’d only give ourselves 3 years worth of movies to choose from though…Lots of room to deviate and customize this little challenge isn’t there?
So are you going to do this again?
You had some good choices but you really really need to see Fried Green Tomatoes….
I was on Xanga and someone wrote an entry about your site (I forgot the entry!) but I’m so glad I came across it. This was very interesting and it provided me with some insight into a few movies that I haven’t seen yet – Atonement, 500 Days of Summer, and Valentine’s Day. I’ll have to save the link to it so I can refer back to it for the movies I haven’t seen yet.
You’re missing Honduras.
Dear Sir, I really like your blog because I like chick flick. I wanna thank you for doing the 30 days chick flick in 30 days, I’ve seen your official list and found some of my favorite movies there, but I’m also found movies that I haven’t got any chance to watch. So, now I’m doing my own 10 days finishing your official list especially the list of your favorites (I’ve watched Atonement only). Why 10 days? Because on the 11th day I have to get back to work LOL
God bless you! (Sarah @ Jakarta, Indonesia)
