“He’s Just Not That Into You” — In-Review

Author: nickhoss | Filed under: reviews

Before it ended, “He’s Just Not That Into You” influenced me to believe that most guys are jerks (myself included).

I also felt resentment toward men, and even confided in my wife the disliking that I had developed toward my own gender.

All of this from/while watching a movie!

Further, while no particular portion of this film’s dialogue stood out to me, one aspect of the storyline did.

It was heartbreaking to watch Bradley Cooper’s character, Ben, dismantle his on-screen marriage to Jennifer Connelly’s character, Janine. It hurt even more so after she forgave him, chose to give him a second chance, and still he relented.

To have something special—the love of one woman, his wife—and sabotage it with the lust of another was sad.

I don’t feel that justice was served for anyone involved in that portion of the plot. See the TAKEAWAY for more insight, below.

Interesting note: “He’s Just Not That Into You” was nominated for the 2010 People’s Choice Awards, USA, Favorite Comedy Movie. Ken Kwapis, the film’s director, also directed “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” (2005).

TAKEAWAY: Being a nice guy isn’t genetic, it’s a choice. Have boundaries in your marriage to protect it; honor them. When a person chooses to love, they choose to be vulnerable.

  1. I’m a bit more familiar with this phrase “he’s just not that into you…” This concept originally aired on the TV series “Sex and the City” (the ultimate in Chick Power programing ;) . There was a male writer for SATC who actually said this to some of his female co-workers. They wrote it into the show.

Later he co-wrote the book “He’s Just Not That Into You” and was on Oprah a few times. His name is Greg Behrendt. He’s incredibly funny, honest and smart.

After watching SATC, Oprah and reading the book I have to say that there are women who share the blame. Men will treat you how you let them. Not all women get walked on like this…just the ones that accept it.

Bottom line; men shouldn’t do it, but women shouldn’t accept it.

BTW…women can be just as bad as men. I’ve seen some nice guys get treated badly by women who employ some pretty bad behavior.

Loved your take away. Gonna miss this blog.

  2. I wasn’t crazy about this flick. I wasn’t feeling the chemistry with the couples.

  4. Saw this one in the theaters too but rented it anyway because I wanted to make sure I remembered it right to comment. I knew I liked it and it was definitely worth the rewatch! I love when Jennifer Anniston’s character gets back with Ben Affleck and he tells her “I love you so much and I want to make you happy. I need to make you happy because I don’t even have a shot at being happy if you’re not”. That’s what love should be. I felt bad for the wife who was cheated on but she chose to go on ahead and look for new things and both the cheaters ended up alone. I was also glad that the one girl got to become the exception not the rule… But come to think of it I guess most of the stories kinda ended that way. Happily ever after (for most of them) good ending for the last chick flick in your challenge!!

  6. Obviously no one was a country music fan! If they cheat
with you, they cheat on you. The movie made me sad.

  7. I read the book when I saw the movie was coming out, and I have to say that the movie did not do justice to the book at all! Being a starstruck film did not help the movie. The way they portrayed the guys was ludicrous and the girls were reduced to pretty much dim-witted status. The book is funny and short, but it is also full of good advice and it shows you how it should feel like. Being a single woman, I read it every time I even think about falling back to a guy just because I am lonely. What is more, the book leaves me with hope…the movie, I only wanted it to end.

  8. I mostly liked “He’s Just Not That Into You” until the last few minutes. They spent the whole movie building up this, “Life’s not like a fairy tale, real relationships don’t work that way” thing, then–surprise!–Justin Long really is prince charming, tee-hee!

Moral of “He’s Just Not That Into You”: He’s totally into you.
