“Love is the only shocking act left on the planet.”
That line—spoken by Ashton Kutcher’s character, Reed, to Jamie Foxx’s character, Kelvin—is heard near the beginning of this motion picture, and in its first movie trailer.
“Valentine’s Day” is a smorgasbord of A-list celebrities in pursuit of love at some level; many of them with each other.
Further, George Lopez’s character, Alphonso, serves as one of the film’s constant figures through the portrayal of his love for his wife, family, and closest friend, Reed.
There is a scene in which Reed asks Alphonso how he got it “right” with the woman that he married; the dialogue that followed is both comical, and personally memorable.
“I married my best friend,” Alphonso said. “I thought I was your best friend,” Reed enquired. “You’re my man. She’s my lady,” Alphonso said smiling.
Interesting note: This chick flick was filmed entirely in Los Angeles, California. Garry Marshall, the film’s director, made a guest appearance as an unnamed musician toward the movie’s end. “Valentine’s Day” was co-written by Katherine Fugate, Abby Kohn, and Marc Silverstein. Kohn, and Silverstein also co-wrote “He’s Just Not That Into You”.
TAKEAWAY: Love exists beyond holidays. It is found every day.

What a cute, fun movie! We really liked this one. It had some great little mini stories going on. I liked when the grandfather was telling the little boy about the first time he fell in love with the prettiest girl he’d ever seen and the boy says, “the pretty girl was Grandma?” the grandfather says “the pretty girl is Grandma” and yes in the classic chick flick definition: I laughed and I cried. The soldier traveling home got me. My mother didn’t figure it out but I knew it was her child she was going to see. I just wasn’t keeping up enough to realize the little boy through out the movie was going to be it. Last year while my husband was over seas we spent our Valentines physically apart. I had to mail out his present and card weeks earlier to get there on time. This year he was home with me and I was so busy with work I didn’t mail any Valentine’s to anyone.. doesn’t mean I forgot them or didn’t love them as much as always (gotta love text messages though.. sends a thought in seconds <3 ) There were so many great things in this movie.. so many thoughts about love that carried over from lots of the other movies we've watched in the challenge.. Marry your best friend stands out of course and what the grandmother tells the grandfather "you're gonna forgive me because when you love someone you have to love everything about them not just the good things" I really liked this movie. (I loved when Jenifer Garner socks it to Patrick Dempsey in the restaurant.. very classy and Queen Latiffa was fuunnnyyy! ) this movie seemed to be like a round up of most of the cast from all the chick flicks we watched together this last thirty days. I think all we were missing was Meryl Streep
Still wish I could have watched it with you all though.
