“Made of Honor” — In-Review

Author: nickhoss | Filed under: reviews

“Hey, Dennis. Come, and curl some ribbon.”

Those words—spoken by Richmond Arquette’s character, Gary, to Chris Messina’s character, Dennis—segue into one of the most personally memorable moments in “Made of Honor“.

Three grown men sitting around a table, curling ribbon, and filling wedding shower baskets with candles and soaps.

I appreciate a movie that depicts the bonding of men around more than a campfire, and a few hand grenades.

It was the guys’ time to shine in-place-of the girls so often depicted in chick flicks as inseparable friends.

Dudes doing what dudes do when a fellow comrade is in need: curl ribbon, and creatively place bath soaps.

Michelle Monaghan’s character, Hannah, did suggest something to Patrick Dempsey’s character, Tom, elsewhere in this film that stood out to me.

She told him, “Sometimes our hearts don’t match our mouths.”

Translated—sometimes we say (or don’t say) the things that we really mean, and the consequences can be costly.

Interesting note: Patrick Dempsey was born in the small town of Lewiston, Maine (pop. 38,000–2000 Census). He stars in the upcoming motion picture, “Valentine’s Day”, scheduled to debut this Friday, Feb. 12, as a doctor.

TAKEAWAY: To love someone, and not tell them can be the same as them never knowing.

  1. i thought this movie was entertaining.

  2. My sister and I were just discussing this movie the other day. We both adore Patrick Dempsey, but felt bad for Kevin McKidd’s Colin. He was a good guy! He didn’t deserve to be left at the alter! It kinda took some of the happy ending out of it, for us anyway.

I love the observation about Tom’s guy friends coming to support him in his time of need. I never thought of it that way. I just saw it as comic relief. Thanks for the observation :)

There are a few movies you’ve reviewed that I have added to my list. Thanks for that, too.

  3. CatScott, you’re so right! I too am sad for Colin now. He was a good guy.

  5. After 21 years Patrick Dempsey returns to his chick flick roots that he started back in 1987 when he starred in the movie “Can’t Buy Me Love” which is a great chick flick too! We saw this in theaters and liked watching it again for the challenge. I liked the part at the parsonage when he’s trying to get his point across that Hannah doesn’t know Collin well enough to even write vows about him and in turn let’s her know how much as her best friend he remembers about her. That’s what my take away is: be best friends with your spouse. (But the end made me smile as much as the beginning made me laugh: I love u Monica, I love you too Bill)
